An old fruit, a simple daily habit.
Lurae began with one question: why does a plant compound the Japanese have relied on for centuries still barely appear in the soap aisle?
Starting with kakishibu
In Japan, fermented persimmon juice — kakishibu — has been in use for hundreds of years. It was brushed onto paper and timber, worked into textiles, and valued for one quality above all: it kept things feeling clean and fresh. The active part is persimmon tannin, a polyphenol the fruit produces in abundance.
That heritage is well documented, and yet outside of Japan persimmon rarely makes it into everyday personal care. Most bars in the odor-control aisle lean on strong synthetic detergents and heavy fragrance instead. They work, in a blunt sort of way, and they often leave skin feeling tight.
A bar built around one job
Lurae is a deodorizing bar, and it is unapologetically focused on that. Persimmon tannin sits at the centre of the formula, with green tea and yuzu extract supporting the fresh, clean character.
But a bar you use daily has to be kind to skin, so the rest of the blend exists to balance it: hyaluronic acid and hydrolyzed collagen for moisture, coconut oil for the rich creamy foam, and vitamin E to round it out. There are no sulfates, parabens or phthalates in it.
Full-size, on purpose
One thing that consistently frustrated us while researching this category: how small the bars are. Plenty of products in this space ship 2 oz bars that disappear in a fortnight.
Every Lurae box holds two genuinely full-size 4.41 oz bars — 8.82 oz in total — along with a mesh soap saver. The saver is not an afterthought either. It builds a noticeably fuller lather, and hanging the bar to dry between showers meaningfully extends how long it lasts.
What we won't claim
Lurae is a soap. It is designed to cleanse well and to leave you feeling fresh, and we're careful to describe it in exactly those terms. It isn't a medical product and it isn't a treatment for any skin condition.
